Can you can?

It's 'stock up on canning supplies week' on the Week-by-Week Storage Plan. (It's on the sidebar. Scroll down until you see it.)  This brings up some thoughts on canning...

I don't can. At least not right now. My opinion on canning is starting to change. It used to be "Eww! NO!" and now it's "It's December and I'm jealous of your beautiful, yummy summer tomatoes canned there on your shelf. I wish I had some!"  I don't know.  I think I want to try it.  Maybe it's because I have a working storeroom again. My sister and her hubby can every year. If I ask her, I bet she'll help me do salsa this year.

So... can you can?

I wish I could can! I have never done it, but every year I plant a garden with the hopes of learning to can, but never do! Wendy, will you post the directions once you can??

Sure will. They will definitely be along the lines of the "dummy" books, though.

Just a heads up. :-)

www.homecanning.com is the website that is FDA and USDA approoved to go along with the Ball Blue Book. You can also go to your local extension office and get the ball blue book or sign up for classes. It's super easy, super fun, and once you get started, it's fabulous!!! (I know this because I am the extension agent that gives the food preservation classes in my county). You'll love it!

I'm sure your sister would LOVE to show you how..then you can help each other out! :) ENJOY!

I make freezer jelly every year but that's the extent of my "canning" (which isn't even technically canning). But it IS good. My SIL does a lot of canning, but she doesn't share! :(

Oh...garden grown tomatoes!! I miss our Utah yard!! I would even go back to that teeny house to have the yard and peach trees. I miss canning! I hope you have a ball!

This was supposed to be our big canning year. I planted a garden and have faithfully tended it, but it doesn't look like it's going to be a bountiful harvest-year.

Maybe it's because our garden is located underneath a very large tree. Hmmmm.

I still want to can, though. The aforementioned sister and husband helped me learn about it last year.

I got my canning supplies...GROW, little plants, GROW!

I've canned twice in my life. Peaches, pears, tomatoes, and chili sauce. Honestly for the work, it's just as cheap to buy the cans from the store. BUT...it doesn't taste nearly as good. And there is NOTHING like the smell of chili sauce baking away come fall. I HOPE to be able to chili sauce again this year. Mmmmm....
